Turn Water Into Liquid Gold With an Alchemy Experiment
Transform Water Into Liquid Gold With an Alchemy Experiment Blend two clear arrangements, pause, and watch the fluid go to gold! This is a straightforward speculative chemistry task or science exhibit, in view of early endeavors to make gold from base metals. Materials Arrangement A 1 gram sodium arsenite50 ml water5.5 ml cold acidic corrosive Get ready Solution A by blending the sodium arsenite into the water. Blend the chilly acidic corrosive into this arrangement. Arrangement B 10 grams sodium thiosulfate50 ml water Get ready Solution B by blending the sodium thiosulfate into the water. Lets Make Liquid Gold! Empty one arrangement into the other. The reasonable arrangement will turn gold after around 30 seconds. For emotional impact, monitor the time and order the answer for transform into gold. You can even utilize an enchantment word if youd like. The Chemistry Behind How It Works There is a postponed response between the corrosive and the sodium thiosulfate to discharge hydrogen sulfide gas. The hydrogen sulfide responds thusly with sodium arsenite to hasten little gems of brilliant arsenious sulfide, which is otherwise called arsenic trisulfide (As2S3) or orpiment. Both Western and Chinese chemists explored different avenues regarding orpiment to attempt to make gold. In spite of the fact that the mineral can be made to seem metallic under specific conditions, the compound doesn't experience any response that changes either the arsenic or the sulfur into gold. All things considered, its a striking exhibit!

MIT campus lost power!
MIT campus lost power! 39 minutes ago, I turned in a pset 2 minutes late (fortunately they hadnt been collected yet) and dashed to 10-250 (one of our big lecture halls) for the weekly Physics department colloquium. The speaker is a guy named Joel Moore from Berkeley, and his talk is on Topological Insulators and Their Implications for Electronic Order. Dont know what those are? I dont really know either, and its ben 35 minutes. That said, he just put up some tensor notation that Ive been learning recently in 8.05 (Quantum II) so thats kind of exciting. 17 minutes ago, Professor Moore was mid-sentence when the lights flickered and went off. The hundred+ physicists in the room went oooooooh! My laptop screen glowed at me and I shut it, since it seemed out of place. The lights flickered back on, and I happened to find myself looking at OH, WAIT! He just brought up Majorana fermions. Thats exciting, since the colloquium a couple of weeks ago was about them. This is what makes attending these colloquia rewarding; you start attending, and understand literally 0.01% of the words used, and gradually pick up on vocabulary as you make your way through physics classes and become exposed to new mathematical techniques and ideas from other talks. Its a nice way to learn about miscellaneous topics that you wouldnt necessarily have time to take an entire class on. And, SWEET! Now hes talking about two-level systems. I spent pretty much all of Thanksgiving break studying those. Theyre one of my favorite topics in quantum; we just learned about constructing a maser (a laser, but with microwave-frequency light in case you werent aware, LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) by, for example, passing a beam of ammonia molecules through a cavity. They deposit energy into their cavity on their way through, corresponding to a specific transition. Its very cool. Anyway, I was telling a story. -The lights flickered back on, and I happened to find myself looking down the lecture hall at Wolfgang Ketterle, who works in the Center for Ultracold Atoms and won the Nobel Prize in 2001. Three rows in front of him is sitting Frank Wilczek, legs propped up on the seat in front of him, who won the Nobel Prize in 2004. The speaker looked a little flustered. The projector was off. A technician came down, fiddled, and determined that there was no power. A couple of people grabbed their coats and headed for the exits. Professor Moore, however, is a HERO; he rolled up the sleeves of his white button-down shirt, picked up a piece of chalk, and turned to the chalkboard. Those of us sitting at the back leaned forward. He struggled with the first drawing, explaining that he wasnt expecting to have to get up and teach. This earned him giggles from the physicists. The enormous wall of nine chalkboards dwarfed him he looked a lot bigger when he was standing at the podium. He used up all the space on the bottom board, reached for the one above it, and found out that these fancy shmancy 10-250 chalkboards operate electronically; he COULDNT bring it down, because of the blackout. Awkward. He took it like a champ, and picked up an eraser. It made me wonder what I would do if there was a blackout during one of my Splash classes. Another note about the situation the scariest part was that the MIT wireless network was temporarily gone. Before I could sink into utter despair, however, whatever system MIT has for this purpose kicked in, and my Facebook page opened up. It had been something like two minutes since the blackout, and statuses were popping up like daisies expressing excitement, demonstrating wit (or not), and quoting some odd MIT emergency speaker that apparently said you may want to evacuateIm not sure. The Internet has done a lot of very strange things to society. It was kind of fascinating to keep an eye on my newsfeed while watching the presidential debates. Another status just popped up, a bit more applicable to me in my havent-slept-for-31-hours state*: power out. naptime. *Last night. Was. Not. Fun. But my oral exam this morning went well, and that was my last of the semester, so HOORAY! Alsois it really only 5pm? aaand an e-mail just came in from my dorms Area Director, saying as Im sure youve noticed, the power in the building is outits out for all of Cambridge and some of Boston. Not sure how quickly were going to get power back (fortunately I have nothing in the fridge at homean excessively busy week has not permitted any grocery shopping trips.) The talk just ended; a group has gathered at the front of the room to talk with the speaker and each other in more detail. Frank Wilczek is laughing with a theoretical condensed matter physicist who I remember from 8.044 recitation last spring, as well as a guy who I think is somehow involved with a NASA space telescope mission (I recognize him from past colloquia), and a fourth guy I dont recognize at all. Im sure Ill see him around. Another nice thing about these colloquia: faces become familiar. I just heard Frank Wilczek just say magnetic monopoles, cosmic strings. I love this place. And the theoretical condensed matter physicist just said: but the feeling I get when facing a problemI get dizzy, you know? Dizzy. Frank Wilczek responded with something I couldnt quite make out, and now hes talking about universality. According to Anonymous Fourth Guy, young people are terrified of entering this field. Interesting. Someone just made a joke about the third rail of condensed matter physics: touch it, and youre dead. Then, they all walked out together. Now Im the only person left in the lecture hall. Professor Moores chalk sketches are still up on the board, and the enormous blank white projector screen is still down. Theres a cavity with a magnetic field marked. An insulator, I think. Some Hermitian operators. A girl walked in, saw I was in here, and left whoops. Thats my cue to post this and head out. On the menu tonight: the last two problems of an 8.05 problem set, a science journalism essay, science journalism class, reading and poster-making for my UROP, a J-Lab paper, and beginning to study for the linear algebra exam I have on Monday. Isnt it wonderful to have such a selection? I should probably be a little embarrassed to admit that the moment the lights went off, my first thought was OH! COOL! A BLACKOUT! I SHOULD WRITE A BLOG POST! but there you are. Not every day does the chance come along to post a shoutout from a blacked-out MIT campus.

A Dolls House by Henrik Ibsen - 1400 Words
Krogstad is one of the most complex characters from Ibsenââ¬â¢s A Dollââ¬â¢s House. Initially, Krogstad appears to be the villain of the play. Nora owes Krogstad a great deal of money. Krogstad uses the existence of her debt to blackmail Nora, threatening to inform her husband of her debt and her forgery if she does not use her influence to secure his position at the bank. Krogstad serves at a catalyst which brings about the central conflict of the play. However, Krogstad has other roles as well. Krogstad is a foil to Nora. He must fight hard to regain the reputation he has lost. Krogstad has been living a decent life for the past year and a half. However, if Torvald dismisses him, Krogstad may never have another chance to regain his foothold in society. Krogstadââ¬â¢s misfortunes began with his unhappy love affair with Christine. The two had been lovers, but Christine had jilted him. Christine loved him deeply, but she married a richer man because she need to support her sick mother. When Christine left Torvald, ââ¬Å"solid ground went from under [his] feetâ⬠; he is now ââ¬Å"shipwreckedâ⬠(Ibsen). He lost all his love and support in the world. He is now a single father, struggling to support his children. Krogstadââ¬â¢s wrongdoings did not stem from an evil heart, but rather from a desperate, broken heart. While Krogstad is the antagonist of the story, he is not a ruthless villain. He arouses pity and sympathy from the audience. He had tried to do r ight, but circumstances are against him. Risk and Return Analysis Essay - 1811 Words
Risk and Return Analysis Paper FIN 402 Risk and Return Analysis Paper Creating the right balance of securities in a diversified portfolio is crucial to maximizing return and minimize risk. This can be done through analysis of current and past activity of each product. Through a risk assessment, return analysis, researching the beta of each security, and reviewing the average risk and return, we can determine the weights of our securities and devise the strongest portfolio to limit risk and maximize return. As a team, we decided to remain with our original five investments; Ford, Microsoft, The Home Depot, Procter amp; Gamble, and UPS to create a strong diversified portfolio that will meet our expectations. With these observations we see that three of the five investments follow the market closely and two are independent of the market behavior. To minimize the risk it is important to balance these results with the returns of each company. Taking into consideration the lowest and highest points throughout the last 52 weeks. The change for Microsoft is .51% while the change for The Home Depot, Proctor amp; Gamble, Ford, and UPS are 7.18%, .95%, -16.87%, and -1.51% respectively (Yahoo Finance, 2011). While UPS and Ford both had a negative change over the last 52 months, one follows the market and one doesnt. The strongest increase was with Home Depot who has a market reflection followed by Proctor amp; Gamble and Microsoft. Taking all this information into consideration our portfolio will be diversified by giving the following weights to our investments; Proctor and Gamble 30%, Microsoft 30%, Home Depot 15%, UPS 15%, and Ford 10%. The Return Midnight Chapter 37 Free Essays
Then Meredith saw something that was not smoke or fire. Just a glimpse of a door frame ââ¬â and a tiny breath of cool air. With this hope to sustain her, she scuttled straight for the door to the backyard, dragging Isobel behind her. We will write a custom essay sample on The Return: Midnight Chapter 37 or any similar topic only for you Order Now As she passed the threshold, she felt blessedly cold water somehow showering down onto her body. When she pul ed Isobel into the spray, the younger girl made the first voluntary sound she had during the entire journey: a wordless sob of thanks. Mattââ¬â¢s hands were helping her along, were taking away the burden of Isobel. Meredith got up to her feet and staggered in a circle, then dropped to her knees. Her hair was on fire! She was just recal ing her childhood rehearsal of stop, drop, and rol , when she felt the cold water turned on it. The hose water went up and down her body and she turned around, basking in the feeling of coolness, until she heard Mattââ¬â¢s voice say, ââ¬Å"The flames are out. Youââ¬â¢re good now.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thank you, Matt. Thank you.â⬠Her voice was hoarse. ââ¬Å"Hey, you were the one who had to go al the way to the bedrooms and back. Getting Mrs. Saitou out was pretty easy ââ¬â there was the kitchen sink ful of water, so as soon as I cut her free from the kitchen chair we just got al wet and dashed outside.â⬠Meredith smiled and looked around quickly. Isobel had become her responsibility now. To her relief, she saw that the girl was being hugged by her mother. And al it had taken was the nonsense choice between a thing ââ¬â however precious it was ââ¬â and a life. Meredith gazed at the mother and daughter and was glad. She could have another stave made. But nothing could replace Isobel. ââ¬Å"Isobel said to give this to you,â⬠Matt was saying. Meredith turned toward him, the fiery light making the world crazy, and for one moment didnââ¬â¢t believe her eyes. Matt was holding the fighting stave out to her. ââ¬Å"She must have dragged it with her free hand ââ¬â oh, Matt, and she was almost dead before we startedâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Matt said, ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s stubborn. Like someone else I know.â⬠Meredith wasnââ¬â¢t quite sure what he meant by that, but she knew one thing. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢d al better get to the front yard. I doubt the volunteer fire department is going to come. Besides ââ¬â Theo ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢l get them moving. You scout the gate side,â⬠Matt said. Meredith plunged into the backyard, which was hideously il uminated by the house, now ful y engulfed in flames. Fortunately, the side yard was not. Meredith flicked the gate open with the stave. Matt was right behind her, helping Mrs. Saitou and Isobel along. Meredith quickly ran by the flaming garage and then stopped. From behind her she heard a cry of horror. There was no time to try to soothe whoever had cried, no time to think. The two fighting women were too busy to notice her ââ¬â and Theo was in need of help. Inari was truly like a fiery Medusa, with her hair writhing around her in flaming, smoking snakes. Only the crimson part burned, and it was that part that she was using like a whip, using one snake to wrest away the silver bul whip from Theoââ¬â¢s hand, and then another to wrap around Theoââ¬â¢s throat and choke her. Theo was desperately trying to pul the blazing noose from her neck. Inari was laughing. ââ¬Å"Are you suffering, petty witch? It wil al be over in seconds ââ¬â for you and for your entire little town! The Last Midnight has final y come!â⬠Meredith glanced back at Matt ââ¬â and that was al it took. He ran forward, passing her, al the way up to the space below the fighting women. Then he bent slightly, cupping his hands. And then Meredith sprinted, putting everything she had left into the short run, leaving her just enough energy to leap and place one foot into Mattââ¬â¢s cupped hands, and then she felt herself soaring aloft, just within distance for the stave to slice cleanly through the snake of hair that was choking Theo. After that Meredith was in free fal , with Matt trying to catch her from below. She landed more or less on top of him and they both saw what happened next. Theo, who was bruised and bleeding, slapped out a part of her gown that was smoldering. She held out a hand for the silver bul whip and it flew to meet her outstretched fingers. But Inari wasnââ¬â¢t attacking. She was waving her arms wildly, as if in terror, and then suddenly she shrieked: a sound so anguished that Meredith drew in her breath sharply. It was a death-scream. Before their eyes she was turning back into Obaasan, into the shrunken, helpless, dol -like woman Matt and Meredith knew. But by the time this shriveled body hit the ground it was already stiff and dead, her expression one of such unrepentant malice that it was frightening. It was Isobel and Mrs. Saitou then who came forward to stand over the body, sobbing with relief. Meredith looked at them and then up at Theo, who slowly floated to the ground. ââ¬Å"Thank you,â⬠Theo said with the faintest of smiles. ââ¬Å"You have saved me ââ¬â yet again.â⬠ââ¬Å"But what do you think happened to her?â⬠Matt asked. ââ¬Å"And why didnââ¬â¢t Shinichi or Misao come to help her?â⬠ââ¬Å"I think they al must be dead, donââ¬â¢t you?â⬠Theoââ¬â¢s voice was soft over the roar of the flames. ââ¬Å"As for Inari ââ¬â I think that perhaps someone destroyed her star bal . Iââ¬â¢m afraid I was not strong enough to defeat her myself.â⬠ââ¬Å"What time is it?â⬠Meredith abruptly cried, remembering. She ran to the old SUV, which was Stillrunning. Its clock showed 12:00 midnight exactly. ââ¬Å"Did we save the people?â⬠Matt asked desperately. Theo turned her face outward toward the center of the town. For nearly a minute she was Still, as if listening for something. At last, when Meredith felt that she might shatter from tension, she turned back and said quietly, ââ¬Å"Dear Ma ma, Grand mama, and I are one, now. I sense children who are finding themselves holding knives ââ¬â and some with guns. I sense them standing in their sleeping parentsââ¬â¢rooms, unable to remember how they got there. And I sense parents, hiding in closets, a moment ago frightened for their very lives, who are seeing weapons dropped and children fal ing onto master bedroom floors, sobbing and bewildered.â⬠ââ¬Å"We did it, then. You did it. You held her off,â⬠Matt panted. Stillgentle and sober, Theo said, ââ¬Å"Someone else ââ¬â far away ââ¬â did much more. I know that the town needs healing. But Grand mama and Ma ma agree. Because of them, no child has kil ed a parent this night, and no parent has kil ed a child. The long nightmare of Inari and her Last Midnight is over.â⬠Meredith, grimy and bedraggled as she was, felt something rise and swell inside her, bigger and bigger, until, for al her training, she couldnââ¬â¢t contain herself any longer. It exploded out of her in a yel of exultation. She found that Matt was shouting too. He was as grubby and unkempt as she was, but he seized her by the hands and whirled her around in a barbarian victory dance. And it was fun, whirling around and yel ing like a kid. Maybe ââ¬â maybe in trying to be calm, in always being the most grown-up, she had missed out on the essence of fun, which always felt as if it had some childlike quality to it. Matt had no trouble in expressing his feelings, whatever they were: childlike, mature, stubborn, happy. Meredith found herself admiring this, and also thinking that it had been a long time since sheââ¬â¢d real y looked at Matt. But now she felt a sudden wave of feeling for him. And she could see that Matt felt the same way about her. As if heââ¬â¢d never real y looked at her properly before. This was the momentâ⬠¦when they were meant to kiss. Meredith had seen it so often in movies, and read about it in books, that it was almost a given. But this was life, it wasnââ¬â¢t a story. And when the moment came, Meredith found herself holding Mattââ¬â¢s shoulders while he held hers, and she could see that he was thinking exactly the same thing about the kiss. The moment stretchedâ⬠¦ Then, with a grin, Mattââ¬â¢s face showed that he knew what to do. Meredith did too. They both moved in, and hugged each other. When they drew back, they were both grinning. They knew who they were. They were very different, very close friends. Meredith hoped that they always would be. They both turned to look at Theo, and Meredith felt a pang in her heart, the first since she had heard theyââ¬â¢d saved the town. Theo was changing. It was the look on her face as she watched them that gave Meredith the pang. After being young, and while watching youth at its peak, she was once again aging, wrinkling, her hair going white instead of moonlit silver. At last, she was an old woman wearing a raincoat covered with bits of paper. ââ¬Å"Mrs. Flowers!â⬠This person, it was perfectly safe and right to kiss. Meredith flung her arms about the frail old woman, lifting her off her feet in excitement. Matt joined them, and they boosted her above their heads. They carried her like this to the Saitous, mother and daughter, who were watching the fire. There, sobered, they put her down. ââ¬Å"Isobel,â⬠Meredith said. ââ¬Å"God! Iââ¬â¢m so sorry ââ¬â your homeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Thank you,â⬠Isobel said in her soft, slurred voice. Then she turned away. Meredith felt chil ed. She was even beginning to regret the celebration, when Mrs. Saitou said, ââ¬Å"Do you know, this is the greatest moment in the history of our family? For hundreds of years, that ancient kitsune ââ¬â oh, yes, Iââ¬â¢ve always known what she was ââ¬â has been forcing herself upon innocent humans. And for the last three centuries it has been my family line of samurai mikos that she has terrorized. Now my husband can come home at last.â⬠Meredith looked at her, startled. Mrs. Saitou nodded. ââ¬Å"He tried to defy her and she banished him from the house. Ever since Isobel was born, I have feared for her. And now, please forgive her. She has trouble expressing what she feels.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know about that,â⬠Meredith said quietly. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢l go have a little talk with her, if itââ¬â¢s All right.â⬠If ever in her life she could explain to a fel ow traveler what fun having fun was, she thought, it was now. Web Apps vs Websites Whats the Difference Does It Matter
Web apps vs websites ââ¬â theyre sometimes confused, and for website owners, knowing the difference can be helpful. Understanding whether you are running a web app or a website can help you to better understand your requirements, and communicate more efficiently with web developers. In a nutshell, web apps are interactive in nature, while websites exist to provide information. Websites are great for presenting blog content and contact information, but for further utility you may need a web app.Obviously, many web platforms incorporateà both static and interactive content, depending on which part of the site youre visiting. For that reason, the line between the two can get blurry, especially on the modern web.In this article, well compare web apps vs websites, outline some of the key differences, then talk about how to choose which one is right for you. Letââ¬â¢s get started! On the whole, users click on a URL and are directed to a page. However, from there, the experience can differ depending on if they have come to a web app or a website.Web apps are interactiveA web app is responsive in some form to visitors. A good example that practically everyone on the internet uses is Google:When you type something into Google and click Google Search, it returns a response in the form of search results. This is a feature Google provides. In this way, it provides an interactive utility thats more than just information. In fact, practically all of Googles services are web apps ââ¬â Gmail,à Google Analytics, Google Docs, and more.Typically, web apps are written using additional languages to HTML. For example, they may also employ CSS, PHP, JavaScript, and others to provide more dynamic capabilities. Some of these functions include search bars, interactive forms, and e-commerce features.Basically, if visitors can make requests of some kind and receive a response, its probably a web app. Additionally, if you can place bids or pay for items its more than simply a website.Websites are informativeIn contrast, websites are informational in nature. This means they dont contain any changing elements based on the actions of the user. To illustrate, many restaurant sites fit this category:They will usually include lots of information, including the restaurants location and its menu. In addition, while it does have contact information, its only in the form of a phone number or email address.Blogs, news, and recipe sites are all examples of websites. A typical blog site presents readable content for users to browse ââ¬â and may include links to other posts, as well as images and videos ââ¬â but does not otherwise contain anything interactive. If there is no user-acting element that will result in a response, its a website and not a web app.Websites are great for showcasing contact information, event schedules, and descriptions of services. They present content but have no way of receiving input from users. How web apps and websites work toget herAt this point, you may have realized its not always easy to differentiate between a web app and a website. In reality, there is a lot of overlap and many websites include web app elements (and vice versa.) For that reason, you dont want to getà too caught up in focusing on the differences between websites and web apps. For example, WordPressà is perfectly capable of running static websites, but its back end provides a highly customizable and extensive content management system (CMS). Therefore, although the website might not contain any interactive elements, its managed using a web app.Another example would be a business page that provides information, but also links to an online e-commerce store. In fact, our own site is a great example. Right now youre engaging with our blog content, but youll also find plenty of links to purchase our plugins and themes (such as our popular Neve theme).Generally, web apps and websites combine when the site owner wishes to add further functio nality. To illustrate, if the owner of the Thai restaurant we discussed above was looking for ways to increase business, they might expand their site to include an online ordering system. This would then become a web app, although the core functionality and features would remain the same.Web app vs website: how to choose which is right for youMany small brick-and-mortar businesses start out by creating a simple website, but as they grow may find they require more functionality to meet the needs of their customers or to generate leads. It may be they would like customers to be able to order products directly from their website, gather feedback with a customer survey, or even simplyà boost engagement with something fun and interactive. For instance, an auto detailing shop might increase their site traffic with a web app that lets you choose different paint colors, and view how theyd look on your car. This is a value-adding feature that transforms the website into a web app.Neverthele ss, some may find it beneficial to keep their website simple. Web app features can complicate your business, such as an online store that accepts credit cards. This store is responsible for safeguarding its customers personal information, as well as needing to be PCI compliant. There are always trade-offs to consider.Despite these potential issues, many choose web apps over websites ââ¬â most e-commerce stores on the internet are web apps, for example. They often provide an important utility to meet users needs ââ¬â without them, the internet might be far less interesting.Overall, if youre just starting out, you might only need a simple, informational website. However, if your long-term goals indicate you may need a web app, its something you can start planning for now. With a platform like WordPress, you can start out by building a simple static website or launching a blog, but still retain the flexibility to add interactive web app functionality later on, like a membership site or eCommerce store.ConclusionAt first glance, web apps vs websites may not seem like a big deal.
